The Good Shire Foundation was inspired by a little girl in our community navigating a rare and complex medical journey—a path that moved a group of friends to take action. We are dedicated to ensuring that families in our community facing unexpected hardships have a safety net to fall back on.

A little girl. A rare diagnosis. A spark for good.
The Situation
Just a few months ago, a local 5-year-old girl was living a completely normal, happy life, playing with her brothers, going on family trips, and simply being a kid. Then things began to change.
What started as something small, waking up with puffy eyes in the morning, led to a series of doctor visits, tests, and ultimately a search for answers that brought her family to Boston Children’s Hospital.
Understanding Her Condition
She was diagnosed with Collapsing FSGS (Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis), a rare and serious form of kidney disease, especially in children.
- It affects how the kidneys filter properly
- Causes important proteins to leak from the body
- Can lead to swelling and other complications
- Often progresses despite treatment
- For many children, including her, it ultimately leads to the need for a kidney transplant
Genetic testing added another layer to her diagnosis. She carries a mutation in the ACTN4 gene, something that has only been seen in a very small number of pediatric cases worldwide. When looking at her exact combination of condition and genetic marker, she is believed to be:
One of only two people in the world with this specific path.
The Relief
